Evolve Engineering was pleased to attend the grand opening of the $2.9-million Centre for Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Learning at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Evolve provided the electrical engineering services for the design and construction of this state of the art facility. Speeches from the three major stakeholders including Island Health, UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, and UVic’s Island Medical Program preceded the tour and live demonstrations of teams running simulations.
The patient was an incredibly lifelike mannequin designed to respond to and interact with the medical students. The mannequin is operated from the adjacent control room to present different challenges and dynamically respond to the course of treatment during the simulation. It was very exciting to observe the demonstrations, with most of the onlookers’ own heartrates escalating as the mannequin’s heart had to be shocked back into proper rhythm.
The simulation labs allow for inter-discipline training and teamwork exercises to better equip today’s medical students and nursing students with the skills they require for exemplary patient care.
